A look back at the 2025 PEPR B-BEST Annual Conference

From June 3 to 5, 2025, researchers and stakeholders from the B-BEST research program gathered at the INSA Toulouse campus for the second edition of the PEPR Annual Conference. The aim of this event was to review research progress and strengthen synergies between projects. A dozen research partners were represented to share their work and experiences.

A variety of topics

The days were punctuated by conferences and discussions on topics that are essential for the future of the biomass conversion sector.

Renewable energies, and in particular the decarbonization of transport, are key issues for the PEPR B-BEST program. These topics were the subject of scientific conferences, and a round table discussion on biofuels was organized. New perspectives on drawing inspiration from nature for innovation were presented by Prof. Marc-Olivier Coppens, a member of the program's international scientific committee. Vincent GRÉGOIRE-DELORY, a lecturer in philosophy, challenged us to question our view of life and the natural versus the artificial.

Some of the PEPR's targeted projects also presented their initial results:

  • New techniques for identifying biomass structure.
  • New ways to control genetic regulation in bioreactors.
  • New ways to recover value from organic waste.
  • Innovative methods for predicting the behavior of bio-based molecules during processing.

Finally, the program's doctoral students took up the challenge of presenting their thesis topics in 180 seconds. This was a valuable exercise that demonstrated how complex topics can be made accessible in a short amount of time.

Highlights

Scientific and interdisciplinary collaboration was encouraged through numerous opportunities for discussion:

  • A session on promoting innovation and the stages of pre-maturation/maturation.
  • Collaborative workshops to ensure consistency between projects.
  • An exhibition of scientific posters encouraged exchanges between researchers.
  • A round table on science communication provided an opportunity to share experiences on disseminating science to the general public.
  • Finally, participants who wished to do so were able to discover INSA Toulouse's “Biotech Alley” with a tour of the TBI, TWB, and CRITT laboratories.
