GQD-BIOCAT

Upgrading of bio-based substrates in a single reactor via a hybrid process using graphene quantum dot photocatalysts and biocatalysis

Winning project of the 2025 call for projects.

OBJECTIVE

The GQD-BIOCAT project aims to develop a sustainable catalytic platform for the valorization of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), a key biomass-derived molecule, into high-value chemicals and polymers.

APPROACH

GQD-BIOCAT integrates photocatalysis and biocatalysis within hybrid multi-catalytic materials, combining:

  • Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) derived from biomass waste, active under visible light
  • Immobilized enzymes enabling one-pot cascade reactions
  • In situ NADH regeneration via photocatalytic reduction, avoiding stoichiometric cofactor use

This synergy enables selective conversion of 5-HMF into key intermediates and further into bio-based polymers and fine chemicals, under mild and energy-efficient conditions.

IMPACT

GQD-BIOCAT targets TRL 4 and delivers a light-driven, modular platform for next-generation green chemistry.
